Excerpts:

The wind was howling, as the heavy rain hammered at the windows, making them rattle. I was lying on my bed with my blankets barely covering my eyes. As I looked out the window, a bright flash of light came across the dark sky. The lightening lit my room only for a few seconds and then vanished just as quickly. A loud thunderous clap followed making me jump.
I used to love the rain, but not anymore. I closed my eyes hoping for sleep to come. I waited, but it never came. That’s when I heard it, two deafening blasts. One right after the other. I slowly crawled out of bed and headed towards the window. I peeled back my curtains. The heavy suede slipped through my fingers. I could feel my heartbeat racing. The next-door neighbor’s lights were on. The sound was so alarming; I knew they might need help.
We had just moved into the area and I didn’t know anyone yet. My parents were off touring Europe. My brother, who was supposed to watch over me, had left to see his girlfriend, telling me to be a “good girl”. Yes, granted, I was sixteen-years-old, but I still felt uncomfortable alone in a new house and a new neighborhood.
I put on a pair of jeans and crept downstairs. I was worried that something had happened to them. Before I knew it, I was outside drenched by the rain. I ran across our lawn to the neighboring house. I ran until I reached their door. The porch light was on and so were the lights in the living room. I peered through the windows to see if I could see inside, but I couldn’t. The curtains blocked me from seeing anything.
I rang the doorbell, but no one came. If the lights were all on, then someone had to be there, right? I waited, my nervousness now getting the better of me. I began to swear at how stupid I was and how stupid my brother was for leaving me alone. I rang it again, but this time I put my hand on the front door. It opened with a soft creak. Some sort of old school jazz music was playing in the background. I inched forward slowly.
“Hello?” I said, my voice cracking from my fear. “I'm your new neighbor, Kassia. I heard a loud sound and thought you might need some help.” I waited, but still nothing.
I moved gradually through the hallway passing a staircase. The music was getting louder as I headed towards the kitchen. I could see pure white tiles lining the floor. My eyes were drawn to a deep red liquid, which had etched itself through the tiles’ grout. My breathing became erratic. I suddenly knew what I was looking at. My mind froze but my body kept going. The pool of blood was now getting larger; that’s when a small knocking sound came from behind me. My breath hitched and I turned around. My eyes zeroed in at the front door. If I run now, I could be back home and safe. I picked up my pace, but a small sound came from behind me. Underneath the staircase was a small cabinet, which I hadn’t noticed before. I reached for the handle and opened it.

I walked over to the wall where I had left my things and picked them up. I figured I
would finish my workout and head out a little later. It wasn’t as if I had anyone waiting for me or anything to do today. I turned and faced the other wall, where tall, wet and dreamy was working out. He had stopped and was staring at me. His light grey eyes narrowed as I stared back. I hiccupped from surprise. Great! Now I look even more desperate. I lowered my head and headed for the free weights.
A few minutes later, he followed. I’d like to think he followed me, but I knew that wasn’t the case. He picked up some weights. I guess he was working his chest. I had looked, only because I couldn’t help it. So sue me. The man was gorgeous with a capital PLEASE HAVE SEX WITH ME! That’s when it happened, the male version of a gym bunny came up to me.

I picked up my weights and stared at myself in the mirror, my long, brown hair was slicked back to a high, tight ponytail. My shoulders were well defined and so was my body. I wasn’t too muscular, but I was fit thanks to my big brother. I positioned my weights over my shoulders and pressed up towards the sky.
Once I finished my set, my eyes wandered again and there he was, still staring at me through the mirror in front of us. Had this been at a bar and I was a little drunk, I would have had the courage to walk up to him and say hi. However, this was my brother’s gym and I was full of sweat marks and no makeup. There were too many negatives to make this a positive for me.

A bright flash of light illuminated the house, followed closely by a loud thunderous boom, which shook everything in my home. I felt tiny little shivers go up and down my back. I hated thunderstorms. I sat there poring over my book, trying desperately to forget the images, which rainstorms brought about. So, when there was a loud knock at my door, you can imagine how much I freaked out. I felt my heart jump up through my throat and my body began to shake. Calm down, Kassia. You are the one who freaked yourself out. I slowly stood up, still trying to calm myself down. The rain was falling hard now. Damn, it was so much like that night seventeen years ago. I looked through the peephole, but all I saw was a hooded man with his back turned. Screw that! I wasn’t going to open the door. I waited and he turned around and knocked again.
“Kassia, it’s me, Jason.” He stopped and I watched as he struggled to say something else. “Can I please come in?” he asked, his voice shaky.

“Look, Jason, I'm sorry about what I said before, about you liking me. You don’t have to worry about being around me. You told me how you felt and I understand completely. No hard feelings.” I waved my hands in front of him, trying to make light of the matter. “And just so you know, I have a date.” I kind of lied, well, you would too. It wasn’t exactly a date. Tiff was just introducing me to someone. Jason’s jaw went tight, his eyes cold and his body stiff.
“A date?” he murmured.
“Tiff is setting me up with a friend of hers and I said yes.” I hadn’t said yes yet, but at
this point I wanted to salvage whatever dignity I had left.

Jason then grabbed my hand and pulled me to him, our faces nearly touching. I looked into his face and saw he was crying. His watery grey eyes had now turned soft and molten as he peered down at me, making me melt from the inside out. His hand slowly reached up and touched my face, gently feathering my skin. It seemed as though he was almost afraid to touch me. He leaned forward letting his nose slide up my jawbone as he took in my scent. My heart began to beat wildly as I felt him ever so fuckin’ tenderly touch me, like I was the most precious thing to him. I closed my eyes reveling in the desire I felt as he ignited the flames inside me. He leaned in closer still; his lips now grazing my neck. A small moan escaped me as his hot breath left my body limp. I was giving in even though I shouldn’t. But I wanted to, I wanted him.
I opened my eyes and saw him staring back, his tears still slowly falling. I reached up and with my thumb I gently wiped them away. He nudged his face into my palm as he closed his eyes. My heart wrenched as I saw him in his personal torment. I wanted to protect him, to save him from whatever was deep inside him. I inched my face closer and tenderly kissed him on his lips. I moved back and gazed upon his face. He opened his eyes and his tears were now falling down onto his lips; he leaned in and kissed me hard.
